Poll Question!

For all you fellow bloggers out there...I've been thinking a lot lately about why I blog & why I read blogs. When I first found a group of Northland bloggers out there, I was so excited! It was really fun to read up on where people were at, what they were doing, see pictures of their kids, etc. So I decided I had to have a blog, too. Just in case there were people out there that were wondering about me & where I was & what I was doing. And even though I don't have pictures of kids to post, I do have a cute boyfriend that I can post pictures of...heehee ;-) Anyway, the basic idea was to get in touch with people I had lost contact with & to maintain contact with others who are far away. And I've done that some.
But after some more in depth reflection I have decided what my one main reason is for blogging and what my one main reason is for blog reading.
I blog b/c I like to write. For those of you who know me well this will not come as a surprise. I love to type out a post about something funny that happened, or a strange question that arose in my mind, or an answer to prayer I've had, or insight about the Lord I've realized. Oftentimes I don't have time to actually sit at the computer & write the posts. But I get to think about them & that process, for me, is much more than half the fun.
I read blogs b/c I am a voyeur. Not in an icky, creepy way. I've always been a snoop - I wanted to know what other people kept in their bathroom cabinets so when I was a kid, I had to look (I promise I haven't done this in YEARS!). When I'm driving, I kind of glance around at the people in the other cars. And if you leave your curtains open at night you're just asking for me to look in as I go by. I just can't help it. And reading other blogs kind of satisfies the same nosey urge in me. Can't help it. Curiosity compels me.
So...why do you blog? Why do you read blogs?

Great question.

I blog because we have always lived far away from "the grandparents" (my and Dan's parents) and it helps them feel closer to us.

I read blogs because it's a connection to friends and like you I'm nosy and like to know what people are up to.

I blog primarily as a means of journaling. I don't have the time to write down everything we do or all the things the kids say, but I can type them out fairly quickly. It's also a "me time" activity. I do write some things just to let people know what is going on in our lives - and I'm assuming once we're over-seas more people (especially family) will check it.

I read my friends' blogs (like yours!) to stay in touch and to know what's going on in their lives. I also use it to catch up with Northland people, though I would say I'm using fb for that more now.

I "second" all your reasons for blogging . . . oh, and have to admit to looking in peoples' cabinets as a child, and not being able to resist looking into a lighted window at night ;o)

I love to blog and read blogs to keep in touch. Facebook is good for little hellos, but blogging really allows you to communicate on a deeper level.

Also, I'm very busy and on the phone a lot at work, so calling all my friends to keep in touch is hard for me. I don't want to sit and chat when I get home, I want to read or go for a walk or cook or watch a movie, etc. Blogging helps me reach more people through one post rather than calling everyone.

My reason for starting a blog was so my mother-in-law who lives in Africa could view pictures of her grandkids and feel like she's a part of their life even though we don't see her often and can't call often.

I read other people's blogs because I like knowing what's going on in their lives and sometimes get a great idea from what they blogged about.

Mary Ann, you make me laugh!! That's why I read your blog. You're such a great story teller and you're funny. I like blogs because you can keep in contact with friends, and I LOVE looking at pictures.

Hmm. My sister in law has been an avid blogger for a few year now. She invited me to join the fun. I kind of toyed with the idea for a while, before finally just stealing my husband's blog. He rarely posts anyway, and since grandparents were far away, I started posting pictures on his. Now we share the blog. I've found I enjoy sharing tid bits of my life with those friends and family who live far away.
As far as reading, its a great way to find out what other's are up to. Kind of like reading Christmas letters all year long.
